Curriculum Mapper™ has been working to create a screen that Macintosh users on the OS 9.2.2 platform can use to take advantage of the enhanced features (text formatting, document attachment, standards integration, etc.). Because Apple computer no longer develops its OS 9 operating system (e.g. all bug fixes and enhancements have been abandoned), this was a difficult task. In fact, Apple’s official answer to those experiencing problems on OS 9 is “upgrade to OS 10.” Obviously, this is not an option for everyone. (Please note: if you are using Macintosh OS 10, this document is not for you. OS 10 has Java built into it and has no difficulty with the Curriculum Mapper™ system.)
Due to the limitations of OS 9 and the MRJ (java) that goes with it, we have been able to create a java applet enhanced “edit” interface for these Macintosh users with the following caveats:
*** When you log on to Curriculum Mapper using a Macintosh OS 9.2.2 (or earlier) computer you will automatically be set to use the Basic Edit screen when editing maps. There is no need to change this, if you don’t want to use any of the enhanced features. However, if you have completed the steps below and want to use the Enhanced Edit screen, click on “My Account à Update My Information” on the menu bar at the left. On the screen that appears, you will see a link at the top labeled, “Switch Interface (Use with Caution!)”. By clicking this link once, you are telling the computer that you want to use the Enhanced Edit screen. This link toggles back and forth between the basic and enhanced Edit screens. ***
Important Note: Once you have created or edited a map using the Enhanced Edit screen, you will no longer be able to edit that month with the Basic Edit screen. However, you can always create months using the basic screen, and then edit them later with the enhanced screen.
I Want to Use the Enhanced Edit Screen – How Do I Get Java on My Mac?
Overview:
Detailed Instructions
To finish up…
1) Choose Edit —> Preferences —> Web Browser —> Advanced then click “Empty Now” (this just empties the cache)
2) Choose Edit —> Preferences —> Web Browser —> Advanced . Make sure “Update Pages” is set to “Always” Click OK.
3) Move the MRJ Cache folder in System Folder —> Preferences to Trash. (Note: on some machines, the folder “MRJ Cache” is found in System Folder —> Application Support.)
4) Move the identitydb.obj file in System Folder —> Preferences to Trash. If the identitydb.obj file isn’t there, you can skip this step.
5) Re-start the computer, and you’re ready to go! Be sure to follow the instructions at the beginning of this page to switch from the Basic Interface to the Enhanced Interface after you log into Curriculum Mapper.
Important differences using the enhanced Edit Screen with Apple OS 9.2.2.
1. Each time you log in to Curriculum Mapper, click on “My Account —> Update My Information” on the menu bar at the left. On the screen that appears, you will see a link at the top labeled, “Switch Interface (Use with Caution!).” Click this link once. You should then be set to use the Enhanced features of Curriculum Mapper until you log out or close your browser.
2. When the Edit screen loads, the spinning wheel will never stop until you move the cursor to the bottom of the page and back up again. This is a bug in the OS 9 operating system.
3.
When opening a new window from the edit screen (e.g. by clicking the magnifying
glass), the window will flash and then “hide” behind the edit screen. Click the
title bar once for the edit screen to send it to the back and view the new
window. When using the edit screen, click on the title bar once of any window
to send it to the back and view what’s behind it. This is a bug in the Apple OS
9 operating system (as usually clicking the title bar should bring a window to
the front, not send it to the back).
